i u d

stands for Intrauterine Device

and is a small t-shaped piece of plastic that is inserted into your body

(specifically your uterus)

(sometimes your arm).

They are divided into two types:

hormonal                  copper

The Things They DON'T Tell You About IUDs:

-IUD's can function as a form of emergency birth control if inserted one-three days after unprotected sex

-Although some copper is absorbed into your blood, there is not enough to be dangerous and will most likely never reach toxic levels.

-Bacteria is introduced into the womb and increases the likelihood of infection. Untreated infections can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility.

IUDS ARE THE MOST EFFECTIVE FORM OF BIRTH CONTROL! They are 99% effective!

hormonal iuds

slowly release

levonorgestrel

into the uterus

which thickens

cervical mucus

and creates a

hostile environment

for sperm.

They last up to

5 years.

copper iuds

slowly release

copper

into the uterus

which is toxic

for sperm and

prevents

fertilization.

They last up to

12 years.

-After initial insertion you can have a period or intense spotting that can last six months to a year long

-The process of insertion

is incredibly invasive and

painful

-During insertion there is a 1/1000 risk of perforating the uterine lining.

-Disorders like endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and premenstrual syndrome tend to increase in severity and length of time after the IUD is implanted.

-The string hangs down from your uterus and can be felt during sex. You also must make sure not to pull on the string because you may possibly remove it.

-Severe cramping and

discomfort are regular

occurrences.

-There can sometimes be strange hormonal side effects including irritability.

-Your periods become irregular and unpredictable

-The hormones could promote cancer growth

-Lethargy and fatigue are quite common side effects

of having metal rods implanted in your uterus as well.
